Mukashi no Yamabito #3 (Honekami)
[Pit Workers in the Old Days #3 (Attending Everyone's Funeral)]
21.2 x 30.2 cm Ink Painting

Attending or participating in a funeral of someone with whom the attendant or participant has no close relationship was called "Honegami (sic; normally honekami: biting bones)'' by miners (yamabito), regardless of whether the deceased was his/her colleague, acquaintance, or otherwise. This word seems to still be used by many people. Someone might say, "I will take a day off (yokou in dialect) today for a certain person's honegami.'' However, it does not mean that he/she really bites or eats bones. Please do not worry about it.
