Pit workers (yamabito) in the old days called job-hunting "game-tsuki (tortoise spearing)" and busying oneself raising money "tsubo-tsuki (pot spearing)"'
Though there were not a large number of unemployed people in the Meiji era (1868-1912), lots of workers moved from pit to pit for personal reasons. Miners who repeatedly search for jobs were many in number. (Some people called mine closing shikai.)
