Yama to Kitsune #2 (Yama no Renzoku Kasai)
[The Coal Pit (Yama) and the Fox #2 (Successive Fires in the Pit)]
21.0 x 29.8 cm Ink Painting

Fires broke out night after night in Y Coal Pit in the early summer of 1899.
"Hey, I hear there was a fire in a row house (naya) in Y Coal Pit again last night. They say another fire broke out in a faraway house while they were putting out a fire. There's probably a pyromaniac in the pit."
Hearing about the series of fires in Y Coal Pit, the people in K Coal Pit also were vigilant about fire. Pit workers (yamabito) would go to bed early in the evening because they had to start working early in the morning. When these fires broke out while they were sleeping soundly, they scarcely had enough time to put on clothes before escaping. Someone even left home in a hurry, holding a pillow covered with a small straw mat.
"There's a fire!"
