Yama to Kitsune (Namikiri Fudo; Kitsune Otoshi)
[The Coal Pit (Yama) and the Fox (Acalanatha Vidya-raja; Driving out the Evil Spirit of the Fox)]
21.0 x 29.9 cm Ink Painting

Acalanatha Vidya-raja (Fudo Myoo), who is considered as one of the avatars of Mahavairocana (Dainichi Nyorai), saves all living things including people. In this painting, in his right hand, he is holding over his head a sharp sword to conquer evil spirits. In his left hand, he is holding a silk rope to bind evil, while standing on a rock washed by waves, glaring at both the sky and the ground each with one eye. It is said that he immediately drives out evil spirits (like those of foxes) which annoy good people by barking at them as well as displaying his powerful might, authority, and flames. Therefore, the exorcist always relied on and prayed to this god to help his client. (This painting shows one of this god's avatars, Namikiri Fudo [Wave-stilling Fudo Myoo].)
