The key to the mystery was found at last. Educated people were not superstitious even at that time. However, the series of fires were so strange that the executives of the pit could not regard them as natural disasters. Therefore, they decided to ask an exorcist to help them, because they thought that it was not time to disregard him as a priest of an evil cult.
Just as they thought, the exorcist said that the fires were caused by fox curses. He stated his thoughts as follows:
The pit was cursed by the foxes because they buried the hole of a fox family when they opened their coal pit. There were a few fox cubs in the hole and all of them were suffocated. The fox parents bitterly regretted their cubs' death, bore a grudge against and decided to revenge themselves on the pit. That is why they set fire to row houses (naya) built around 1899 one after another.
