The people in the pit (yama) prayed to the mountain deity for the prosperity and the safety of the pit as well as thanked the deity for keeping them safe and sound.

[Translator's Notes: The name of the deity, which is written on the two long flags in this painting, is Oyamatsumi-no-okami.]

Text at the Top Left
On every November 3rd, the festival of the pit deity and the award ceremony for those who had long served in the pit were held, and money for liquor and food was handed out to all attendants. Also a sumo tournament by children, rokyoku (story telling accompanied by shamisen) recitation, dances and so on were done as entertainment.
