The Japanese army suffered about 17,000 casualties and the hostile troops suffered tens of thousands of casualties in this battle.
Text on the Right Side
Imperial Japanese Army began to deliver the all-out attack on Liaoyang on August 25, 1904. A war hero of our army, lieutenant-colonel Shuta Tachibana and his troops bravely attacked Fort Shoushanbao in the heart of the city of Liaoyang and fought a fierce hand-to-hand combat. It is said that the fort was taken and retaken seven times, turning a real scene of carnage. Lieutenant-colonel Tachibana died a heroic death, slaying a few enemies with a sword in his left hand after being hit by enemy bullets in several parts of his body including his right arm, covered with blood. Liaoyang fell on September 7th after such a ferocious battle that both sides suffered the most casualties since the outbreak of the war.
Note: Lieutenant-colonel Tachibana, the war hero, became especially famous after the Russo-Japanese War and he was not well-known during this war, during which another war hero, Imperial Japanese Navy Commander Hirose, was overwhelmingly popular.
