[Pit Workers in the Old Days #15: Pictures in the Show Box #8 (General Oku of the 2nd Army)]
20.9 x 29.9 cm Ink Painting

The 2nd Army of the Empire of Japan under the command of General Oku landed on the Liaodong Peninsula in February of 1904. They intercepted the Russian army from Dal'nij (today's Dalian) under the command of General Alekseev in Jinzhou. At the impregnable fort of Nanshan, the battle they fought was so fierce that it could have made even the gods weep. They took the fort after fighting desperately against the enemy by charging at them several times, suffering huge casualties. A certain regiment was annihilated in the battle. Private Kotaro Yamase fought bravely, wrapping the regimental colors around his body to protect it from the enemy, and died a heroic death. "The blood-stained regimental colors" caused a great sensation in Japan after the war.
