On January 23, 1902, 210 soldiers led by Major Shin Yamaguchi of the 2nd battalion of the former 5th Infantry Regiment met with disaster on Mt. Hakkoda in Aomori Prefecture. Only 12 [sic: actually 11] of them survived. However, 198 [sic: actually 199] soldiers were frozen to death, being buried in the snow. It was said that Corporal Goto carried out his duty as an orderly, escaping through a blizzard. This tragic event with so many casualties gave everyone a big shock at a time when they were anxious about war clouds in the Far East. This tragedy was also sung in a popular song titled "Setchu Kogun Mutsu no Yuki (March through the Snow in the Land of Mutsu [Aomori])." People always talked about this incident whenever they gathered together until the Russo-Japanese War broke out on February 6, 1904.
