The Pump Man
1958 - 1963

Pompukata
[The Pump Man]
21.3 x 30.3 cm Ink Painting

The Evans Steam Pump introduced to the pit in the late-Meiji era (1868-1912) made drainage of the pit very smooth and efficient. The Special Steam Pump which had been used before this pump frequently failed and troubled pump men very much.
The old pump had a wooden roller with hemp-rope packing and all four subsidiary valves of its water suction cylinder were plate types. An Evans Steam Pump with a water suction cylinder more than 10 inches in diameter had subsidiary valves made of rubber and a brass roller valve with leather packing, which raised the efficiency in drainage.
