[Woman Towing a Coal Basket in the Meiji and Taisho Eras]
21.1 x 30.2 cm Ink Painting
In the Meiji (1868-1912) and Taisho (1912-1926) eras, a kind of dragging basket (sura) called a "battera" was used to carry coal in the slopes with uneven inclinations, near faults etc., regardless of the thicknesses of coal beds. It was a shallow oval-shaped basket with no sled under it. However, two skids (surase) of cut bamboo were attached on its bottom.
