Mukashi Yama no Hitobito #15 (Iki na Saodori, Norimawashi)
[People at Coal Pits in the Old Days #15 (The Sharp Transport Man, the Mine Car Driver)]
20.6 x 29.3 cm Ink Painting

Let me show you the costume of a transport man called a (saodori) norimawashi. I heard some young girls in coal pits at that time were ecstatic and fell in love with transport men like this and went crazy for them at first sight.
First he tied a white headband with a knot behind his head to raise the outer corners of his eyes, wore a wide red stomach band under flashy suspenders, a new white shirt, new trousers, dark blue gaiters, Japanese socks with dual toes and special Japanese zori sandals on which he firmly stood. He would jump as lightly as a little bird on the metal fittings connecting mine cars to the wire rope while holding a polished brass lamp with a reflector shining gold in his hand, which looked amorous and sophisticated.

Lyrics of "Gotton Bushi" Song
Washi no sama-chan hako norimawashi,
norikata jozu de nao kawai.
Dokkoi! Dokkoi!

My sweetheart is so good at riding on mine cars
that my love for him grows more and more.
Dokkoi! Dokkoi! (Interjected chants)
