[Tail Rope]
21.1 x 30.3 cm Ink Painting
Text at the Bottom Left
The tail rope was a 5/8" endless zinc rope. The transport man told the winding machine operator to carry out the mine cars by sending him signals of "Go ahead!" or "Go astern!" The other side of the rope was hung on the pillars by the wall on the inclined side of the slope. This method of coal haulage is not as efficient as endless rope haulage.
Text at the Top Left
This winding machine was moved by an about twenty-horsepower electric motor. The rope was wound five turns on the main wheel and four turns on the auxiliary wheel, and the tension of the rope was adjusted by moving the bearings of the latter (the wheels have grooves around them). No operator was necessary.
