Asagao (Yoru no Koguchi Shomei)
[Asagao (Lights to Illuminate the Pit Mouth)]
21.1 x 30.4 cm Ink Painting
In the mid-Meiji era (1868-1912) when no electric lamps were available in the coal pit, the pit mouth was illuminated at night by light from bonfires of coal, which were called asagaos.
Precious lump coal was freely burned in an iron basket on a tripod about one meter high for each asagao.
