[Women at Coal Pits (Yama) in the Old Days #15 (Woman Carrying Water with a Yoke and Pails)]
20.6 x29.2 cm Ink Painting
There was no water supply system in small-scale coal pits in the 30's of the Meiji era (1897-1907) and the miners in the pits often worried about drinking water. Since the coal bed of a pit lay near the surface, water did not come out if they dug a well near the pit mouth. Tired as they were, the women in the pits carried water, shouldering a yoke and pails (ninaioke or tago) from the well 500 to 1,000 meters away, taking the bad road after exiting the pit. A pair of pails could contain more than 36 liters (2 to) of water and it was a considerably heavy burden.
