[Pit Workers in the Old Days #4: Buzen-bo #2 (Effect of the Miraculous Water)]
20.9 x 30.0 cm Ink Painting
There was a rumor that, owing to the miraculous water, lame people or people who had been unable to walk became able to go back home on foot. That blind people recovered their sight and went home after throwing away their sticks, and that dumb or mute people went home, singing. The stories about the remarkable effect of the water utterly impressed the pit workers. The water was promoted by every conceivable means including the pictures seen through the glass lenses of nozoki show boxes.
Note: I don't know if Buzen-bo tengu (Japanese long-nosed goblin) went from Mt. Hiko to Akizuki on business. I only slightly remember the rumor among the adults because I was only 11 years of age at that time.
Song Lyrics at the Top Middle
Kome ga jussen surya,
ya kora sanosa,
togumi ya kusaine.
Chosan!
If rice cost 10 sen (0.1 yen) per sho (1.8 liters),
ya kora sanosa (Interjected chants),
we are obliged to buy cheaper imported rice (togumi) ,
but I can't get used to the smell of it.
Chosan! (Interjected chant)
