There was a rumor that caused a great sensation. According to the rumor, the Buzen-bo tengu appeared in Akizuki at the foot of Mt. Kosho, which was famous for its boxwoods, in Asakura County. The rumor also said that the water which sprang out from the valley of the village was miraculous, having the ability to immediately and completely cure serious diseases. The rumor rapidly spread all over the northern part of Kyushu, including coal pits in the Chikuho region. The superstitious pit workers at that time scrambled to go to the spring, hoping that some of the miraculous power would rub off on them. It was in the early summer of 1903. (It is said that some tengu have an octagonal stick in their left hand.)
