Though it was not clear from what island she came, there was a woman who held a large basket on her head and vended in the pit, calling, "Would you like some kombu (kelp)?" The basket had an approximately 60-centimeter-square bottom and a round top rim, and was about 40 centimeters in height. She said that the gross weight of the basket and the kelp which she bore was 40 kilograms or more. Everyone looked surprised again at the strength of the woman from an island or her neck bones to hear her say so.
Another old man came from some farm village. He also hung a big red paper-made pepper at his waist on the left side and hawked around in the pit, rhythmically calling, "Ton-ton-ton-tonko tongarashi (togarashi) no kona (cayenne pepper)!"
These goods were unfamiliar to children.
