[Rice Riots at Coal Pits (Yama) #3]
20.9 x 30.1 cm Ink Painting
Letting out a war cry, hundreds of rioters rushed into their mine store filled with commodity. They did every violent thing imaginable, breaking all of the goods at random or tossing them out, except for sake barrels. Drunkards among them carefully removed the lids of the barrels to drink as much sake as they could. As they got drunk, they got excited again. They encouraged each other in high spirits, saying, "Let's go on rioting with spirit like this!" The ringleader nicknamed Saburo Asahina [the name of a very strong samurai in the Kamakura period (1192-1333)] stole lots of 50-sen (0.5 yen) coins from the safe in the mine store and handed out a coin to each miner as a reward for joining the rioters.
