[People at Coal Pits (Yama) in the Old Days #9: Hand Pump]
20.6 x 29.2 cm Ink Painting
All in a sweat, they were, so to speak, human engines (ningen enjin) moving the hand pump while sweat ran down their bodies like waterfalls. This work was so severe that even muscular men could not continue pumping for a long time. There was another type of water pump using Mo-so bamboo whose knots were removed, and it was called a fuigo.
Lyrics of "Gotton Bushi" Song
Nanto baketa ka Mitsuzu no sai wa!
Sai wa gon go roku Ainoshima.
Gotton! Gotton!
It's marvelous that these Mitsuzu game dice made such a rare cast!
My six and double fives made a winning combination called Ainoshima.
Gotton (Clang)! Gotton! (Interjected chants)
