Bira-mon (Canvas Door)
Canvas doors or curtains made of dungaree (rongorosu or dongorosu nuno) for ventilation were hung at some points in the levels in coal pits (yama). The curtains were deliberately stained with coal tar here and there because they were stolen if they were clean. They were also stained with coal by mine cars. How nasty those canvas doors were!
Haiki-to (Up Cast Tube/Tower)
This is an up cast tube/tower used in S Coal Pit around 1899 when no ventilating fan was available. It was 1.8 meters square in cross section and 15 meters or more in height. This tower was built with square wooden panels.
