Mukashi no Yamabito (Honegami)
[People at Coal Pits (Yamabito) in the Old Days (Attending Everyone's Funeral)]
38.2 x 54.4 cm Painting in Watercolors and Ink

Attending or participating in a funeral of someone with whom the attendant or participant had no close relationship was called "Honegami (biting bones)'' by miners, regardless of whether the diseased was his/her colleague, acquaintance or otherwise. This word is still used by many people. Someone might say, "I will take a day off today for a certain person's honegami.'' However, he/she does not really bite bones. Please do not worry about it.
