Creepers were used near coal washers and tipplers (daruma) at middle and large-scale coal pits. These devices carried empty mine cars from low places to high places (piers or trestles) so that the mine cars naturally ran down toward winches near pit mouths.

An engine of 20 or 30 HP was directly connected to the gear wheel at the top. The gear wheel of the engine was small, and the gear wheel of the main shaft which it meshed with was big.
