[Children in Coal Pits (Yama) in the Mid-Meiji Era (1868-1912) #3: Knocking over Pickets]
25.5 x 35.6 cm Painting in Watercolors and Ink

In a boys' game called nembo, boys took their opponent's small pickets by knocking them over with their own pickets. The boys in the pits worried about how to get materials to make pickets. If they cut tree branches in the nearby mountains, they were scolded by farmers. In some pits, boys could not play this game. They cut tree branches in copses and sharpened their thicker ends after removing small twigs.
