On August 17, 1918, the rice riots spread to coal mines in the Chikuho region. The first riot in this region occurred at Mineji Coal Pit in Tagawa County. About 100 rioters rose up against the high price of rice and raided their mine store. They broke everything in the store.
It is said that the leader of the riot said that his name was Saburo Asahina [the same as a legendary samurai in the Kamakura Period (1192-1333)]. I wonder if his lord Yoritomo Minamoto [the founder of Kamakura Shogunate] sent him to help.
