Meiji Chuki Yama no Kodomo #11: Danshi Noriuma Asobi
[Children in Coal Pits (Yama) in the Mid-Meiji Era (1868-1912) #11: Boys Riding Each Other]
25.5 x 35.5 cm Painting in Watercolors and Ink

The wooden wheeled pheasant drawn by the girl on the right was made by her parents.
The two boys on the left are playing noriuma asobi (horseback riding game) in which the winner of "rock-paper-scissors" became the first one to ride on the back of the other. The boy riding on the other's back held up some number with his fingers and asked the other, "Shika shika nambo? (How many fingers am I holding up?)" If the other boy could guess the number, he could change roles with the boy on his back. He could not change his role until he successfully guessed the right number.
