The winner of each round of "rock-paper-scissors" ("janken" or "ranken-poi in Chikuho dialect") could get a piece of the playing ground little by little by drawing an arc with a nail, a piece of bamboo or a piece of wood. Sometimes the winner drew an arc with his finger. Anything could be used to draw the arcs. The winner of the game hit the loser's wrist with his forefinger and middle finger, which was called "shippi." An extremely hard hit turned the loser's wrist red. The results of the games were sometimes recorded on a wooden board with chalk.
