[Coal Pits in the Early, Middle, and Present Showa Era (1926-1989)]
21.2 x 30.3 cm Ink Painting
Big masses of coal accumulated in front of the coalface after blasting it. Miners could not scoop up such masses with a shovel, so a jack hammer was used to break the rocks into smaller lumps. The pick of the jack hammer was as long as about 30 centimeters and had a brim and a sharp tip. The hammer had no cock with which to start it. It started to vibrate and make a noise like a clockwork Japanese doll (chotaro ningyo) when the pick was pushed against a mass of coal.
Text at the Top Right
The pick had a brim and was fixed to the stem of the hammer with a spring to keep it from falling off.
