[Children in Coal Pits (Yama) in the Meiji Era (1868-1912) #12: Boys and Girls Playing Together; Hide-and-Seek]
25.5 x 35.6 cm Painting in Watercolors and Ink

In kakurembo (hide-and-seek), children decided who was "it" by janken (rock-paper-scissors). The "it" counted from one to fifty or a hundred with his/her eyes closed and/or covered, leaning against a pillar. Meanwhile, all the other children hid themselves. Some hidden children caught "it" off guard by running and touching the pillar, saying, "Kerimashita! (I kicked it!) "
If the "it" could not find all of the players, he/she finished the game, saying, "Ageru! (Finish the game!)" or "Yurusu! (I forgive you!)''
