Mukashi Yama no Hitobito #19: Rinchi #2 (Kinako to Yobu Gomon)
[People at Coal Pits (Yama) in the Old Days #19: Torture #2 (Torture Called Soybean Powder)]
20.6 x 29.0 cm Ink Painting

This painting shows a torture called "kinako" at pits in the Chikuho region. In this torture, one of the regulators poured water on the ropes bound around the rule breaker so that the ropes would cut into his body, causing more pain. Moreover, the other regulator beat him and the rule breaker rolled about on the earthen floor in agony. The man's body was covered with dirt like a rice cake covered with soybean powder (kinako). I do not know if this is where the torture's name comes from.
I never heard a clever word like kinako in the Meiji period. Since the above torture was referred to like this in the Showa era (1926-1989) before World War II, I guess it was given the name at that time.

Regulators' Words
Torishimaricho: "Shikkari doyase! "
Torishimari: "Kon chikusho!"

Chief Regulator (Right One): "Beat him hard!"
Regulator (Left One): "You damn bastard!"
