Mukashi no Yamabito #5: Hogen Ninawase (Ninawase Kiriha Shichu-ho)
[Pit Workers in the Old Days #5: Ninawase in Dialect (How to Support the Roofs of Haulage Ways with Prop and Strap System Support Units Called Ninawases)]
21.2 x 30.3 cm Ink Painting
This support unit was used in the haulage ways (kairo: normally kaido) to the coalfaces. Therefore, thin timbers were used for beams because miners' backs scraped against them if they were thick. A trick for building each ninawase firmly was to exactly measure the sizes of both pillars and stand them without using any wedges (kamisashi).
Note: The ninawase was not used so often in the Meiji era (1868-1912) because it took much time and money to build them.
