The Outlet of the Chain Conveyor
May 1965

Chen Kompea Otoshiguchi
[The Outlet of the Chain Conveyor]
38.1 x 53.8 cm Painting in Watercolors and Ink

Text on the Right
Until around 1935, at Inatsuki Coal Pit (Nittetsu), the chain of their chain conveyor had been received by a roller, whose revolving speed was variable. It hung between two rails installed in the level where the outlet of the conveyor was. However, this type of roller was removed and replaced with an improved one because it had prevented miners from smoothly loading mine cars with coal.

Text on the Left
Though I guess that other pits had better equipment, I have never seen or heard of it, so I could not paint it. The steel plate used for the shown bed-type box supporting the roller was 3/8 inch thick. The box was 3 feet in length and more than 1 foot in height. The roller inside was 6 inches in diameter.
(The loader loaded coal into mine cars on the double-track railway line one by one without stopping following mine cars.)
