Seventeen-syllabled Funny Poems (Senryu)
Sendo wa kitakaze fukeba ebisugao.
The barge driver is happy when the north wind blows.

Rankan ga mieru koro kara ho o odoshi (sic: normally oroshi).
He begins to take down the sail when a bridge rail comes in sight.

The empty barge heading home upstream was moved by the wind blowing against its sail.
The east wind in early summer brings rain. It rains in spring and summer and turns out fine in autumn on the day after seeing the red sky at sundown. The Onga valley has continuous rainfall with the north wind "Jirikita" in February, March, August, and September. The west wind foretells the coming of a sunny day. The south or southeast wind brings clouds and rain.
Barge drivers knew much about the weather lore as described above. In the Onga valley, we have a rainy day after having great frost for three days in a row.
