In this battle, the Japanese and Russian armies fought a fierce battle with each other, taking and retaking the fort many times. The fort reportedly changed hands (ownership) as many as 7 times.

An army war hero, Lieutenant Colonel Shuta Tachibana met a heroic death in this battle. After he was shot through his right arm, he killed dozens of opposing soldiers with his sword wielded in his left hand. It is said that he was like a kijin (fierce god). He died on September 1, 1904.
