[Performers and Peddlers Who Visited the Pit (Yama) in the Meiji Era (1868-1912): Conjurer Performing the Sword-draw]
38.1 x 54.1 cm Painting in Watercolors and Ink

Twisting his waist with a yell, this conjurer skillfully drew a two-meter-long Japanese sword which looked as if it were the one used by Jurozaemon Magara of Nodachi-gumi (Field-Sword Corps) famous for the Battle of Anegawa written in Taikoki (a story about one of the conquerors of Japan in the Age of Civil Wars, Hideyoshi Toyotomi). He also astonished the audience by drawing a sword about one meter long with both of his wrists tied together with a short hempen cord.
This man also seized an opportunity to pick out a boy with a bad tooth from the audience and pulled out the tooth. He eventually forced the audience to buy books on dental treatment. Most of these wandering conjurer performing the quick sword-drawing technique sold only books on dental treatment.
