[Rice Riots at Coal Pits (Yama) #6: Mineji Coal Pit (The Rioter Throwing Dynamite from the Top of a Utility Pole)]
38.2 x 54.1 cm Painting in Watercolors and Ink

At Mineji Coal Pit, a rioter threw dynamite from the top of a utility pole. At first, many other rioters under the pole tied each piece of dynamite to a hempen cord (hosobiki) so that the rioter on the pole could pull it up and throw it after igniting the fuse (michibi) with a lit cigarette held between his teeth. The dynamite flew very far from the pole and was as dangerous as could be.
Soldiers rushed to the scene and warned him several times to stop throwing dynamite and come down the pole, but he did not heed their warning. The soldiers reluctantly aimed their guns at the man on the pole. There was a gunshot and then another. The bullets hit the rioter's chest and he fell headlong, being killed on the spot.
