In winter, clouds moved quickly and the north wind blew hard. One out of 20 school children wore a coat. A few fortunate ones wrapped themselves in red blankets. Most children wrapped their heads and bodies with flannel cloths. Children wearing blue blankets were rarely seen. They wore hand-sewn socks with laces. The laces would not loosen easily if they were tightly tied, but they would undo while walking if not and thus annoyed children.

Song Lyrics at the Top
Karakkaze
Osamu kosamu fuyu no kaze.
Are are karasu ga niwa sanwa,
Ka-ka-ka to naite yuku.

Osamu kosamu fuyu no kaze.
Are are konoha ga futatsu mitsu,
Chira-chira-chira to tonde yuku.

The Cold Dry Wind
The cold dry wind in winter blows strongly and weakly.
Look! Look! Crows are flying away in twos and threes,
croaking, "Caw-caw-caw" as they go.

The cold dry wind in winter blows strongly and weakly.
Look! Look! Leaves are blowing in twos and threes,
fluttering about the road as they go.
