Endless Rope Haulage System and the Tail Rope
1964 - 1967

Endoresu to Teru Ropu
[Endless Rope Haulage System and the Tail Rope]
38.1 x 53.9 cm Painting in Watercolors and Ink

Text at the Top Right
The below painted double track was a part of the endless rope haulage system (senjoki), on which mine cars did not go astern. Since the tower at the end of this system, which supported the truck with the tension sheave and the hanging weight, had to be tall, it was built on a height above the slope on the surface. For this system, a steam engine was used until the mid-Taisho era (1912-1926), and an electric motor was used after that. Used wire ropes for winding machines were reused for these systems, and most of them were more than 7/8 inch (23 mm) thick.

Text at the Bottom Left
The tension of the endless rope was adjusted by the weight hanging from the tower. These towers in small-scale coal pits were all built with wood. (Building them with iron bars cost too much for them.)

Word in the Inset at the Bottom Left
daburu pisuton: double-piston steam engine

Text at the Top Left
The two insets on the right show the tail rope used in a slope with a single track. In this case, mine cars were wound up and down. Therefore, one side of the rope ran along the wall on the inclined side (katakabe) of the slope. The rope used here was a 5/8-inch-thick (16-mm-thick) zinc wire rope. The wire rope drum rotated together with the motor, and no operator was required. The tension of the wire rope was adjusted by moving the smaller sheave wheel (magoguruma) behind the wire rope drum.

Words in the Inset at the Top Left
jubariki ijo no mota: motor with more than 10 HP

Words above the Inset at the Top Left
tochu suicchi: intermediate switches
modori: Down
maki: Rise
o-rai: Stop
botan o osu: Buttons were pressed to operate the winding machine.
