Mukashi Yama no Hitobito # 22: Rinchi #5 (Maotoko no Miseshime)
[People at Coal Pits (Yama) in the Old Days # 22: Torture #5 (Exemplary Punishment on Adulteresses)]
20.6 x 29.1 cm Ink Painting

When an adulterer and adulteress (maotoko) were made example of, the man was hung head down and burnt, and the woman was bound on a cross with two bars and exposed to public view by the side of the main road without a stitch of clothing on. Every passer-by had to beat her on the private parts with a provided whip. If a person beat her softly out of sympathy, he/she was rebuked by the watchman and ordered to beat her harder after being shown how to use the whip. (This was done according to the rules of the pit in a certain island.)

Mihari: "Koraa! Motto hiroku (normally hidoku) tatakanukaa!"

Watchman: "Hey! You! Beat her harder!"
