21.1 x 30.3 cm Ink Painting
Text on the Right Side
This painting shows an adulteress who was made an example of at a certain island pit.
It was said that the adulterer was hung head down and burnt, and that the adulteress was crucified on a cross with two bars to be exposed to public view by the side of the main road without even a stitch of clothing on. Every passer-by was reportedly made to beat her on the private parts with a provided whip.
Text on the Left Side
If a person beat her softly out of sympathy, the watchman beat both the person and the woman, showing how to use the whip.
Mihari: "Korya! Masukoshi hidoku tatake!"
Watchman: "Hey! You! Beat her harder!"
