Yama no Kome-sodo #11
[Rice Riots at Coal Pits (Yama) #11]
20.9 x 30.2 cm Ink Painting

The Central Coal Pit of the Futase Branch of Yahata Ironworks was located on the western edge of Iizuka Town in Kaho County at that time. All miners at this pit gathered at the foot of the refuse heap (bota yama) in the pit. Being in high spirit, they held an indignation meeting to obtain their demands for a reduction in prices and a raise in their wages. These hot-headed workers were on the brink of changing into rioters.
Leader: Listen! Is everybody here?
Follower: Most of us are here, but Bokoyama [assumed name] and a few other men haven't come yet.
Leader: Find them and bring all of them here at once!

Text at the Bottom Left
(Iizuka Town changed to Iizuka City in 1932.)
In 1934, Yahata Ironworks became a semi-governmental company and the pit changed its name to Nittetsu Futase Kogyosho. Later one chimney was added to the pit, bringing the total number of chimneys to three.
