At small coal pits, safety coal pillars were cut and thinned out. Therefore, all of their slopes and levels were thrown into danger of collapse in a short time because of rock pressure. The slopes and levels quickly became narrow and their roofs sagged. So, repairers of such pits had to cut roofs (kiriage shikuri) and walls (kirihirome shikuri) to widen the slopes. This repair work was very difficult and only experts could do it. These roofs and walls could collapse (o-bare ni naru) if repairers did not skillfully use lagging called hane-nari (normally hane-naru: springy lagging) or uke-nari (normally uke-naru: supportive lagging) to temporarily support dangerous roofs. They had to do their work quickly but carefully.
