Text at the Top Right
These are repairers or underground carpenters called shikurikatas repairing the level (kanekata) ruined by rock pressure, cutting away its roof and walls or inserting additional supports (kiriage shikuri). They said a repairer was not good until he/she became able to sharpen wood wedges (kamisashi) very well. However, lots of repairers sliced their left thumbs while they were cutting wedges.
