Uchikomi-nari
[Driving Lagging]
21.3 x 30.4 cm Ink Painting

Text at the Top Right
When the roof of a slope in the pit, such as the main slope, collapsed and its ceiling heightened, the repairer drove lots of lagging densely into the roof to prevent refuse from falling. He inserted support units one by one if the refuse was composed of small pieces instead of larger shale slabs.

Text at the Bottom Left
After driving the lagging, the repairer removed the refuse on it and inserted a support unit into the gap between the lagging and the roof, again driving other lagging from above the beam. (Drops of water fell from the roof near the pit mouth and they were called hitsuji.)

Box at the Bottom Right
