On August 18, the government sent the military to suppress the rice riots. From the 47th Regiment based in Kitagata, Kokura, 57 soldiers were sent for putting down the rioters in this region.
Most rioters ran away when they saw the armed soldiers, but some of them fought back and a few were killed.
The soldiers had been waiting for their dispatch to Siberia, and I suppose they were keyed up over it at that time. However, they must have felt it discouraging and unpleasant to fight against the hungry rioters who had been unable to eat enough rice because of its high price.
