All the commodities sold at the raided mine store were broken and thrown out. Among the commodities, piece goods for kimonos were tossed out and piled up as they were. A man wrapped them in a cloth larger than a blanket and tried to steal them, shouldering the pack. A soldier hailed him upon spotting the deed. The soldier ordered the man to show him what was in the large pack. The man began to trot away without paying any attention to the soldier's repeated orders that he should stop and unburden the pack. With a yell, the soldier jabbed out his bayonet, which pierced the man's thigh, killing him from blood loss. (It was said that he was not a worker in the pit [yamabito].)
