Yama no Kome-sodo #9 (Jikeidan)
[Rice Riots at Coal Pits (Yama) #9 (Vigilantes)]
38.0 x 53.8 cm Painting in Watercolors and Ink

The ringleader who took a false name of Saburo Asahina [name of a famous samurai in the Kamakura period (1192-1333)] was arrested and the riots ceased. After the dust settled, there was still a restless atmosphere. People formed vigilante groups (jikeidan) everywhere. They tied a red and white armband around their left arm, and conducted security checks on main roads, inspecting every passerby. These vigilantes earnestly worked in the daytime, but some of them turned into mobs at night. They were like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
Soldiers stood sentry at every station from Soeda Station to Kanada Station as well as Iizuka Station in Kaho County.
