(At that time, the military was sent out and stationed at Nogata. They were a company from the 14th Regiment.)
The rice riots spread to the Second Takao Coal Pit of Yahata Ironworks Futase Branch in Igisu [Kaho County], Mitsubishi Namazuda Coal Pit [Kaho County], and Kaijima Onoura Sugamuta Coal Pit in Kurate County on August 22, 1918. The riots were started at Furukawa Second Shakanoo Coal Pit in Katsuno Village (Kotake Town [Kurate County] today) on August 24, as well as at Yahata Ironworks Futase Branch Central Coal Pit [Kaho County] on August 27. It semiofficially became Nittetsu Futase Mining Company in 1934.
Miners left the pit and gathered in Kifune Shrine during their shift time that day. They demanded a wage increase of 30% and reduction in the price of rice, but their company did not answer their requests. That is why they started a riot that night. Their leaders were miners named Masajiro Tashiro (21), Kaichi Hoshino (25), Chogaku Umemoto (28), Hiroshi Mishima (18), and so on.
"Hey, is everybody here? I don't see K (initial) and a few other guys. Find them.''
