Yama no Kome-sodo #5 (Guntai no Shutsudo)
[Rice Riots at Coal Pits (Yama) #5 (Sending of the Military)]
21.1 x 30.4 cm Ink Painting

Soldiers were sent to put down the rioters for the first time since the Japanese Imperial Army had been formed. It seems that even the furiously raging rioters hardly could resist the soldiers. However, some reckless miners fought back and were killed by bullets or bayonets.
Instead of fighting in combats, it must have been a discouraging duty for the soldiers to fight against their countrymen who rioted because of the difficulty of living, which was caused by the inflation in prices including the price of rice.
However, upon receiving the news that their dispatch to Siberia was near at hand, the soldiers' spirits were supposedly also lifted.
