Yama no Kome-sodo #9
[Rice Riots at Coal Pits (Yama) #9]
21.0 x 30.2 cm Ink Painting

Soldiers sternly stood sentry in front of each station near pits in this region (such as Gotoji Station, Soeda Station, Ita Station and others). Additionally, the people in pits and towns also organized vigilante groups to strictly guard against the rioters. Each of them wrapped a red-and-white armband around their arm, turning into champions of justice as shown in this painting. It was openly said that though these people in Soeda during the daylight hours solemnly watched over and checked the passers-by to guard against suspicious characters while harboring dark thoughts, many of them joined rioters in the dark at night.
